How Long is the drive from Pokhara to Jomsom?

Asked by: 4108 views , ,

How many hours does it take to drive from Pokhara to Jomsom?

Can I drive my own jeep there or will the local transport people create problems? If I need to halt somewhere for the night, is beni better or Tatopani?  What are the hotels in Tatopani like?

Dear all, I just visited to jomsom on 13-March-2013, here i am going to share how did i go.

Day 1: reached Pokhara on bus as I took a bus ticket from Kantipath (near thamel) at 7.30 am in the morning and reached Pokhara by 2.30pm.
    Overnight in Pokhara,

Day2: then i took a taxi to Buspark, for which i pad Rs. 400 from my hotel in Damside. I took 20mins to reached there. As soon as i reach, i am offered by a taxi driver to go to Beni. However there are many buses which were waiting to be filled. I was rushing, so i took a taxi along with other 3 passangers together, I paid Rs. 650 for 2hrs drive to Beni.
I reached Beni around 1.30pm, then i was shocked to know that there’re no buses going to Beni at this moment, as i am being late. I was told by a person in a ticket counter. Even though i reserved a bus ticket which was supposed to leave around 3pm, i had to wait, choice. I had to wait for other passengers to come and fill the empty bus seats to go to Ghasa. It was difficult to kill time, I noticed few lodges and guest house at Beni, but my instinct was telling me to leave Beni as soon as possible

I am again approached by a local taxi driver asking me to pay Rs. 1000/- to go to Tatopani, which will take 3-4hrs. I denied.

As time go by, ticketing officer had no sign for any bus to depart. We were now, total 5 people waiting for other 13 people to come to fill empty bus seats. Again, difficult to kill time.

Then ticketing officer urged me to collect rest amount for 13 people and divide by 5 confirmed passenger, pay the total sum and only then agreed to depart. However, after some time, ticketing officer informed us, that they’d arranged a Jeep for 10 passengers. Some relief, as i asked other 4 passenger to pay and depart, they also agreed to pay. As soon as i was collecting money, i saw another jeep with 4 foreigners (because their flight cancelled in the morning) approaching to counter. Thanks god, tI came to know they aree also leaving to Muktinath via Jomsom. Now we were relieved. We didn’t have to pay double.
The jeep was standing by and we headed to Ghasa same day. We left around Beni around 3pm. We reached Beni in the late evening around 7.30. It was bit cold. The drive was very rough. Road are pretty scary but safe, as jeep driver was cautiously driving. We had to stop only once at check point, where foreigners had to validate their permit.

I had to stay overnight there at Ghasa, then had to catch bus by early morning, which is supposed to depart by 8am. Nice hotel, nice food, nice people i met there in Ghasa. I was surrounded by gigantic mountains and warm people. All the tiredness were relieved by the
    beauty of Ghasa. Just amazing.

Day 3: as i get up, had a light breakfast and finally had to leave Ghasa for Jomsom, We left on time. I was expecting some nice travel, but it was not. Rough drive was just started. Narrow roads, steep georges, beautiful snow covered mountains, 10-15 km/hr drive, expect bumpy and jumpy trip. I was not carrying to much luggage, it was easy. When we left it was only 10 passengers, but bus driver kept adding people on it way and soon, our bus was full of other local strangers, including women, children, and infants.

Its an easy scene, as there are no other means of travel from one place to another there. Before reaching to Jomsom, we had to stop at two different location for Lunch and toiletries
When i reached Jomsom, it was already 3.30 pm (7-8 hours drive from Ghasa). I had to stay there for a while. That;s how i reached there.

The next day i had to return, i wanted to book flight tickets, but difficult to get one. There’re many chances to get flight cancelled by weather. So i prefer road option to go back to Pokhara. I didn’t go to Muktinath.

Luckily same day i found a 4WD which was going back to Pokhara, i asked my hotel manager to talk with the driver if he’s interested to take me back in his Landrover, He agreed, I packed by bag and came back, it took 6hours non-stop drive from Jomsom to reach Pokhara. I was lucky enough to get a private jeep then.

    That;s it.
Hope it will help you readers.

Recently i have been to jomsom. I will share my experience hope it will help you.

I take micro bus from Kalanki for pokhara it takes about Approx 6 hours then i take taxi to go to beni(actually the bus was already pack) it takes about Approx 5 Hours. Then from beni to tato pani i catch another local bus it will take around Approx 3 Hours to reach there. From tatopani you can catch a local bus to ghasa but for you jeep is also available as a extra option it will take around 2 hours. From ghasa you must have to catch a local bus or jeep if you are thinking to reach jomsom on your own vehicle then you must have to leave your vehicle on ghasa unless you are having your own bike. Even the reserve vehicle are not allowed to move forward from there. It will take around 4 hours to reach the destination.

Hope this information may help you. Good luck for your trip.

Bus & Jeep Services are available from Pokhara via Beni, Then Beni to Ghasa, via Tatopani, to Jomsom. It will take rougly 12 to15 hours.

Tatopani is much better to spend the night since you can enjoy the hot springs near the Kali Gandaki river. The accommodation is Tatopani is pretty good (for a trekking destination), but of course not to be compared with the variety of choice and standard as in Pokhara.
