Canyoning or canyoneering is one of the extreme outdoor sports which include different techniques like abseiling, climbing, jumping, diving, and swimming. Climbing and abseiling is done with the help of a rope and harness.
There are lots of places in Nepal where we can enjoy canyoning. Nearest place in Kathmandu for canyoning is Sundarijal, inside Shivapuri National Park (see: http://www.yentra.com/question/93) which is about half an hour drive from Kathmandu and Kakani which is about an hour drive from Kathmandu.
These canyoning trips can be done in 5-6 hours. But if you want a full-day canyoning you can go to Jalbire, on the Mugling-Narayanghat highway, which is about 110 km drive from Kathmandu. It will take about 2.5 to 3 hrs drive from private vehicles. This is one of the best spots in that area for canyoning.
After 2.5 to 3 hours of drive you have to walk for about 20 minutes to reach up to the “Lamo Jharana” the longest waterfall which is about 95-meter high. This is one of the longest waterfalls in this region.
There are about 5 waterfalls which are about 45-50 meters high. Depending upon the water level, experienced guides will help you for canyoning. If the weather is good and the water level is okay, you can enjoy canyoning in all five falls, but if the water level is high than normal, guides will only allow you to do canyoning in one waterfall.
Guides will brief you about the canyoning – what to do, what your position should be while abseiling, how to handle the rope while abseiling, what to do if you slip during abseiling, and other important things.
After briefing, guides will suit you up with the canyoning gears, i.e. harness, safety helmet, and wet suits. After gearing up, we are ready for canyoning. You can swim for a while before starting canyoning.
Canyoning can be done for refreshment from your hectic schedule to enjoy weekends with your friends and families. This is one fun thing to do this summer. So pack your bags (actually you don’t need to really pack your bags) and get ready for canyoning this summer (or any other summer). I along with other friends enjoyed this trip very much. Hope you will feel the same.
