Today, 26 March, 2026, Thursday,
If you are a foreigner or a visitor and have 3-5 hours of free time;

> Go to Janabaha chowk, midway from Asan to Indrachowk (near Luchu bhulu Ajima Temple), wait and watch the main deity Seto Matsyendranath being installed on the small, well-decorated chariot, followed by young and loud dhimey (drums and other instruments) musicians, mixed from different areas. Just feel the vibe.

Note: the following video is an archive from 16 APRIL, 2024.

Mandala Television (Full Video)

Then, the small chariot is paraded until the Durbar Marg (Teen Dhara Pathshala), around 12-1. and is installed on the 30ft(approx) chariot.
You may see a crowd gathering, young and old, kids and children.

The main chariot is pulled and paraded from Durbar Marg ⟶ Ratna Park ⟶ Bhotahity ⟶ Asan today.

Locals, mainly from the Asan, Jamal, Indrachowk, Kel tole, Makhan, and Basantapur area, highly worship the Seto Matsyendranath deity, also known as Janabaha Dyo, Aryavalokitesvara, or Karunamaya.

The Seto Machindranath chariot festival (Jana Baha Dyah Jatra) is an annual 3-4 day event in March-April (Chaitra) where the white deity, and its chariot, is pulled by an official committee and designated public.

Watch the installation of the Seto Machindranath idol in Janabaha:

The deity is brought to Teen Dhara Pathshala (Durbarmarg) by designated priests.

Even if you don’t understand the rituals, the energy around Seto Matsyendranath Jatra is unreal.
If you're nearby, don’t overthink it—just walk with the crowd for a bit. That’s literally the experience.

If you're heading there, a quick tip:
  • Go light (no big backpacks), carry your own water bottle.
  • Keep your phone secure (crowd gets tight)
  • Best viewing spots: edges near Asan or Jamal or Bhotahity.
Also, expect delays—the chariot moves slowly, but that’s part of the charm of Kathmandu during festivals.

Anyone here actually followed the chariot from start to Asan today?
Drop your photos/videos
Would be cool to see how the crowd looked this year vs last time.
