This was one of those ‘you had to be there’ experiences (2012).
Everything — the vaireties of the food, the aiyla (local drink), and the mandala draw (mostly family members drew it all) —
i noticed the mandala used many seeds in circles. I saw rice, unhusked rice, black soybeans etc, and the family also lit an oil stamp on top of it, and a food plate on top of the fire and mandala.
I was also amazed to see the type of fruits, including walnut, and the colorful mala, a thin thread woven, my god, it was a mesmerizing moment for me, i felt like i was a godlike for the entire session.

you guys have to be there for sure.

it looked something like this

Exciting event but won't be able to attend.
but could somebody post the "walking tour route" in Kirtipur’s old town?
is it a different town city like bhaktapur? any restaurant and rest-house should you recommend too?
thanks.

Try this route, a possible Kirtipur Walk route. (local tour guides: any suggestions welcome)

If you are arriving from thamel, take Pathao (Riding App) upto TU Cricket Ground.
Alight there if you would like to enjoy little forest walk on its way. And 30-45 minutes walk to the Chilancho Stupa. Google Map Direction. (take traditional walking route).
Here's my suggestive itinerary.
  • Start at Chilancho Stupa: start 8:00AM to avoid traffic
A pagoda-style stupa on a high point, surrounded by traditional Newari homes.

  • Head to Bagh Bhairab Temple:
Located about half a kilometer from the stupa, this Hindu temple is a guardian deity of Kirtipur. From the back of the temple, you can get a panoramic view of the Kathmandu valley. Google Map Direction

  • Conclude at Uma Maheshwar Temple:(10:30 AM - 11:00 AM tentative completion time)
Situated at the highest point of Kirtipur, this temple offers excellent views of the entire Kathmandu valley, including Swayambhunath and the White Gumba on a clear day. Google Map Direction

For a decent local food, newari meal, have a lunch visit Newa: Lahana, 5-8 minutes walk from Uma Maheswar Temple. The resturant is a decade old. It's a very traditional eatery, women-led friendly place. Also, you may be seated in the floor, and expect little bit spicy.

Try: Mixed Bara, with Daykula, Fokso Fry, additional Alutama (Bamboo soup), ask if spicy or not, before placing order. Bring your own bottle of water, recommended.

Then, walk the naya bazar, downhill to the bus park. The choice is yours, local bus or back to ride sharing app PATHAO.
Enjoy :). Let me know when you are done with this.

Alternatively, you can visit a holy lake called TAU DAHA, and attached to it, there's continental restaurant, and has a great lake view from the table. Google Map Direction. (10 mins drive from the Uma Maheswar area)

    Thanks.
