For many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims, Damodar Kunda is a once-in-a-lifetime destination. The sacred lakes sit high in Upper Mustang, close to the Tibetan border. Reaching them on foot is a demanding multi-day trek. A helicopter turns it into a single-day pilgrimage from Pokhara.
This guide covers what the tour involves, what it costs, when to go and how to plan it.
Damodar Kunda is a group of high-altitude lakes in the restricted Upper Mustang region. The three interconnected lakes are Brahma Kunda, Rudra Kunda and Ananta Kunda, and together they mark the start of the Kali Gandaki River. Devotees believe a bath in the water cleanses sins from this life and past ones, and many hope to visit at least once in their lifetime.
Most operators put the site at about 4,890 m, though a few quote figures up to 5,400 m. Expect thin air, freezing temperatures and strong winds even on a sunny day.
Flight times are short compared with the overland route. A flight takes roughly one hour from Pokhara or about an hour and a half from Kathmandu. Time on the ground at the lakes is limited, so plan your rituals in advance and keep them efficient. Altitude, weather and aviation permissions all affect how long you can stay.
Because of the high altitude, helicopter payload is restricted. One helicopter carries a maximum of four passengers on this route. Tell your operator everyone's body weight and baggage when you book.

How the Helicopter Tour Works
The most popular option is a one-day private or shared charter from Pokhara. The helicopter usually stops at Muktinath first, so you can pay respects at the temple and the 108 sacred water spouts (Muktidhara). It then flies on to Damodar Kunda and returns to Pokhara the same day.Flight times are short compared with the overland route. Damodar Kunda Helicopter Tour Cost (2026)
There is no single price. Cost depends on where you depart, whether you charter privately or join a shared flight, group size and what the package includes. Current published rates include:- Shared flights: Group-joining flights cost about USD 1,200 to 1,300 per person. This is the cheapest option when seats are available.
- Private charter from Pokhara: A private charter generally runs USD 4,500 to 5,500 per helicopter, shared by 4 to 5 passengers.
- Charter from Kathmandu: This costs more because of the longer flight. One operator lists USD 6,000 per flight from Kathmandu. Others quote higher, with some listing USD 8,750 for a four-person flight.
- Multi-day packages: These add hotels, transfers and sightseeing. Trekkers Nepal's 5-day package lists a starting price of $2,900 per adult, and other operators' packages with similar itineraries run far higher.
- Permits are usually extra. A special entry permit for Damodar Kunda costs US$500 per person. The Annapurna Conservation Area permit adds about US$30 per person. Some operators also add airport taxes and local landing fees. Always ask whether a quote includes permits, landing fees and Pokhara hotel nights.
- Plan the paperwork early. Operators say the permits for every traveler are needed for the flight permit, and processing takes at least a week. Permit rules for the region have also been changing in 2026, so confirm current fees with your operator before paying a deposit.
Best Time for a Damodar Kunda Helicopter Tour
- Best windows: March to May and September/October to November. These are the most reliable months for clear skies and stable flying. October and November are especially good because the monsoon has washed dust and haze out of the air. One operator lists October to December and March to May as the best season.
- Monsoon (June to August). Upper Mustang sits in a rain shadow, so the weather is often better than in the rest of Nepal. Even so, cloud in the Kali Gandaki gorge and on the approach can ground flights, and schedules are less dependable. The one reason to go anyway is the Janai Purnima festival in August, which draws pilgrims despite the weather.
- Winter (December to February). Flights are possible on clear days, but it is extremely cold at the lakes. The water may be partly frozen, which makes ritual bathing difficult.
- Book an early-morning departure. Weather windows at this altitude are very limited, so morning flights give the best chance of success.
- Keep a spare day in your plan. Flights may be rescheduled because of unpredictable Himalayan weather.
- Check the forecast for both Pokhara and Jomsom before you travel. Clear weather at one end does not guarantee clear weather at the other.
What to Pack
- Thermal layers, a down jacket, a windproof shell, gloves and a warm hat
- Sunglasses or snow glasses and strong sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude)
- A towel and spare dry clothes if you plan to bathe
- A water bottle, any personal medication and a copy of your travel insurance
- Original passport, since permits are issued against it
Who Is This Tour For?
It suits pilgrims, older travelers and anyone short on time who wants to reach Damodar Kunda without a 12 to 14 day trek. Even though you fly, you will be at nearly 5,000 m. Check with your doctor first if you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, and be honest about how you feel at altitude. If you feel unwell on arrival, descend rather than push on.Plan Your Damodar Kunda Helicopter Tour with Trekkers Nepal
